THE YEAR OF LIPSTICK

reviewing & reccomending affordable lip productsy

As part of my new year's resolution for 2024, I declared 2024 THE YEAR OF LIPSTICK.

I don't know a lot about makeup in general. I generally slap on a sparkly eyeshadow and leave it at that, but I've always wanted to dig deeper into lipstick! And thus, the year of lipstick was born.

This page will be focused on reviewing and reccomending affordable/drugstore lip products!

If you have reccomendations for me, please holler!! This is a time of exploration.

E.L.F. Hydrating Core Lip Shine
Brand: E.L.F.

Shade: Ecstatic

Price: $7

Type: Tinted Lip Balm

Applicator: Stick

Transfer: Easily Transfers

Lasting power: Relatively long lasting power if you're not eating or drinking, but deifnitely needs reapplication throughout the day.

Overall thoughts: This is one of my current go-tos! I bought this one becuase it was reccomended as a dupe to Clinique's Black Honey, which costs over three times more. The color is subtle but lovely, you can add more layers to increase the pigment. The hydrating core makes it feel real nice on the lips.

L'Oreal Glow Paradise Balm-in-Lipstick
Brand: L'Oreal

Shade: Blush Fantasy & Ecstatic Mulberry

Price: $9

Type: Balm-in Lipstick

Applicator: Stick

Transfer: Easily Transfers. One sip of a drink and it's pretty much time to reapply.

Lasting power: Average for a balm/lipstick, great pigment.

Overall thoughts: This lipstick feels like BUTTER. When they say they added balm, brother they added balm. I first tried the Blush Fantasy shade, and I was a little dissapinted because it's so close to my natural shade, but it grew on me as a nice neutral. I picked up the Ecstatic mulberry shade and fell in love. Would probably be even better with a good liner.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick
Brand: Revlon

Shade: Black Cherry

Price: $10

Type: Lipstick

Applicator: Stick

Transfer: Moderate Transfer

Lasting power: Average. Reapplication over day, but not horrible.

Overall thoughts: Lustrous in the title is not a lie! Feels nice and silkly when applying. Love the color, gives a vampy vibe. I was told this one was a cult classic, and I can see why.

NYX Smooth Whip Matte Lipstick
Brand: NYX

Shade: Bday Frosting

Price: $8

Type: Matte Lip Cream

Applicator: Wand

Transfer: First layer definitely has some transfer, but it's so pigmented that the color will show even after eating. You're going to get lipstick marks on the glass but it's not all gonna come off.

Lasting power: Seems to be long lasting.

Overall thoughts: I won't lie, when I tired this one I was skeptical. The lipstick itself is pretty thick on the wand and that was concerning, but it applies incredibly smooth and feels good on the lips. I almost expected a pilling effect since it felt pretty thick, but I have yet to see evidence of that occuring. Biggest criticism is that it feels very thick, but maybe I just got a bad batch.

Shade: Tunnel Vision & In the Zone

Price: $10

Type: Matte Lipstick

Overall thoughts: I loveeee this one. I'm a matte girlie first and boy for $10 this one delivers. Heavily pigmentmented and easy to apply. Some pilling if you apply to dry lips, make sure to hydrate in advance. If you're looking for an affordable long lasting matte lip, this is your best friend.

Wet n Wild Mega Last High-Shine Lipstick
Brand: Wet n Wild

Shade: Jam with Me

Price: $2

Type: High-Shine Lipstick

Applicator: Stick

Transfer: Very easy to transfer

Lasting power: Not incredibly long lasting, needs pretty regular application. However, the color does seem to fade out pretty nicely.

Overall thoughts: For 2$? This lipstick is a miracle. Great color & texture, definitely high shine. Doesn't last all day, but hey, it's 2$. Definitely exceeded my expectations. I have noticed that if you don't use a liner the color does tend to run into the small cracks around your lips after awhile.
